Shropshire General Branch
The Shropshire General Branch has made use of online branch process to communicate with its memebrs regarding the employment changes imposed by the County Council employer. The Shropshire County branch went online to its members on 2.3.09 and added further District Council staff later in that year. In 2010 the branch campaign against local cuts and reorganisations brought the online branch into effective use. The result was a clear and quantifiable level of engagement by members with the campaign.
The graph shows visitors to the branch website over the Summer of 2011. Each peak represents the response to an email sent out from the branch. The branch has significantly increased the proportion of email addresses held for members, enabling them to communicate quickly with more than half the membership. The branch has used their online presence to keep members informed of camplaign information and of progress in negotiating with the Council. As part of the campaign the branch used their site to publish comments from councillors oppisng cuts and also the chief executive’s response. The use of the site enabled the branch to engage with over 30- 35% of members on a monthly basis during the campaign, to achive a higher than average turnout in the ballot for action and to have 25% of members repond to a series of emails over 3 days as part of the build up to strike action.
